Santayan Sengupta graduated M.Des with Product Design from NID Ahmedabad in 1994 and worked briefly as a designer at Tata Interactive Systems, Mumbai.
In 1997 he moved to Ranikhet to work for an NGO called 'Grassroots', to pursue his interest in applying design thinking for social issues. There he trained local carpenters to make solid wood furniture designed for urban households. Since 2000 he has teamed up with batchmate and partner Himalini Varma to run 'Thoughtshop Foundation' (TF), a Kolkata based NGO with partners in several developing countries. Over last two decades, he has helped design tools and systems to empower marginalised young people to claim their rights. TF works mainly to secure gender and child rights in communities, and also to create innovative playway methods to engage grassroots communities on a wide range of development issues, from farming to family planning.
Santayan has been a design educator since 1993, taking short courses at NID ahmedabad, and in design schools in Kolkata. He is a musician who plays by the ear, and composes for audiovisuals produced at TF.
