Course - Overview

This program equips students to apply the principles of design to a wide range of communication challenges across various forms and types of media. They will develop an understanding of people in their socio-cultural settings and devise appropriate strategies that lead to communication products, systems, services, and experiences.


Graphics Pathway: Shaping the Message

The Graphics Design pathway offers students a golden opportunity to pursue professional development in graphics, illustration, sequential art, typography, image processing, motion graphics, and narration via a variety of formats. The key elements of the course place emphasis on originality and conceptual development. Students work with traditional print media as well as contemporary digital formats, which are essential skills for today’s market.

Graduates of this pathway will have the knowledge and skill to pursue professional careers, such as graphic designing, typography, illustration, conceptualising storyboards, print and layout designing, forming motion graphics, and two-dimensional animation.

Interaction Pathway: Beyond Prototyping

Are you curious to understand how technology works? Do you enjoy building things for how they work as well as how they look? Interaction Design fulfills these requirements as an interdisciplinary pathway where students learn how to build, analyse, and evaluate digital products, services, and tools. The competencies this course strives to develop in students blend technical comprehension with research methodologies to develop a unique conceptual approach to problem-solving.

Graduates of this pathway will be equipped to pursue a range of careers, from Information Design to Human-Computer Interface development.


Animation & VFX Pathway: Conceptualize, Design, Develop, and more

Animation and Visual Effects is an interdisciplinary pathway where students will learn the nuance of creating rich and immersive digital experiences. This course explores various techniques utilised by professionals in telling impactful stories and ideas through production and post-production processes.

Graduates of this pathway will learn how to create media content for a range of delivery systems and can pursue careers in fields such as visual effects (VFX) for film, commercials, & TV, along with 2D and 3D animation, gaming, training & simulation, product visualisation, and virtual & augmented realities.

With a career spanning over 35 years in the design industry, Alex Velasco is an expert in design education, product design and design thinking. He has taught design students in the United Kingdom, Turkey, Georgia and India. He attained a Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship for post graduate study (1993) and has been awarded the South African Bureau of Standards design award (2000).
