Course - Overview
This course is a two-year comprehensive industry-oriented pathway that trains the students to develop both as professionals and entrepreneurs in the field of marketing and merchandising by providing extensive knowledge and developing technical & behavioural skills in the core functional areas of Merchandising, Marketing, Branding, Integrated Marketing Communications, Product Development, Sourcing, Buying, and Range Planning. Pearl Academy trains students to be professionals who can conceptually and critically analyse complex problems to propose intelligent and compatible solutions in both the fashion and lifestyle verticals.
At the start, the course engages the student to attain a broad overview of the global fashion and lifestyle industry. It has been designed in a manner that it encompasses the entirety of the fashion value chain, from raw materials to retailing, along with basic marketing principles. It also provides a knowledge and understanding of the elements & principles of fashion design, communication channels, terminologies, and fabrics, coupled with their applications in the fashion business. It will help them acquire and develop an understanding of the designing and marketing perspective across all levels of fashion merchandising & production. The course also emphasis on design thinking, which aims to develop an appreciation and understanding of what design contributes to the overarching business landscape in students.
The following semesters will focus on building one’s aptitude in fashion business, such as problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills. Students will be prepared for the outside world by sharpening their knowledge and skills for visual merchandising, online & offline marketing, buying & merchandising, and retailing through various live industry projects. Research tools and techniques suitable to the specialisation will be used to interpret the reality of the fashion business world. The students will get an opportunity to undertake an overseas exchange or an Internship or a live project with a fashion and lifestyle brand.
Introduction to Fashion
This module enables the student to attain a broad overview of the global fashion and lifestyle industry. It has been designed in a manner that it encompasses the entirety of the fashion value chain, from raw materials to retailing, along with basic marketing principles. It also provides a knowledge and understanding of the elements & principles of fashion design, communication channels, terminologies, and fabrics, coupled with their applications in the fashion business. It will help them acquire and develop an understanding of the designing and marketing perspective across all levels of fashion merchandising & production.
Business Environment – I
This module is devoted to helping students acquire a comprehensive view of business functions such as finance, accounts, & economics. It also aims to provide an understanding of the management processes, the needs and contexts of organisations, and the contribution of central business functions to an organisation’s objectives. The purpose of this module is to develop a holistic understanding of the management, organisations, and functional areas from a critical perspective.
This module provides the opportunity for debate, in-depth research, and analytics to understand consumers, markets, statistical techniques, and the subsequent examination of situations for decision-making purposes.
This module strives to develop the aptitude to communicate ideas, meanings, messages, and information through discussion, presentation, critique, writing, noting, annotation, reporting, and essaying. It also serves to inculcate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) capacities across necessary and semi-specialised software.
This module aims to develop an appreciation and understanding in students regarding the contribution of design methodologies to the business. It introduces students to the fashion sector by taking a creative and exploratory approach to practice-based research while exploring a bevy of fashion and design issues. It enhances the understanding of cultural, social, and political changes in the broad scope of design innovation. Along with this, there’s a cross-module assessment in the semester that will facilitate the integration of subject matter across these four modules.
Buying and Production Processes
This module will acquaint students with the core functions of merchandising and vendor development, such as merchandising operations. It also familiarises the students with the supporting software and systems used.
Business Marketing and Communication Design
This module facilitates the student to understand the concepts of marketing, branding, and digital marketing, along with its practical applications.
Advanced Business Research
This module will facilitate the students to conceptually understand advanced marketing research techniques, designs, and tools to formulate marketing strategies and plans for fashion businesses. This module also helps them develop analytical skills through the application of statistical tools. A cross-module assessment will also enable the integration of subject matter across these four modules.
Business Environment – II
This module facilitates the learning of various concepts and skills required for the utilisation and development of human resources & industrial relations to ensure organisational effectiveness. It will also help the student’s ability to analyse the financial and economic environment, including financial statements, accounting statements, valuation methods, and investment.
After year 1, students undergo an 8-week summer internship in the industry.
Strategic Fashion Marketing and Merchandising
This module will familiarise students with advanced strategic concepts and applications of marketing and merchandising.
Entrepreneurship & Project Management
This module will enable students to ideate an entrepreneurial project and manage issues related to the same.
SCM & Business Intelligence
This module allows students to understand the crucial role of supply chain management to increase their efficiency and productivity so that they can build a competitive advantage and develop business analytical skills.
Overseas Exchange or Internship
In this module, students will get an opportunity to undertake an overseas exchange or an internship with a fashion and lifestyle brand for 8 weeks.
At semester 4, students have an in-depth & systematic understanding of applied areas and can work with theoretical & research-based knowledge. This will help students handle industry tasks with minimum guidance. The student will be engaged in a professional practice along with either an industry-linked live project or industry analysis projects.
An Italian origin fashion designer, he has lived and studied out of England which helped him develop an eclectic signature, accuracy for details, and a new-age approach to design. His curiosity and aptitude to learn about the various facets of design have allowed him to win two prestigious competitions, namely the 2003 Award as the "Young Designer Of The Year" in Bristol and the 2008 Award of being an "Emerging Talent In Rome.
