The Fashion Buying and Merchandising Course at Pearl Academy in association with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) is tailored for individuals with a discerning eye for style and design, coupled with a keen interest in the commercial facets of the fashion industry. This comprehensive short-term course encompasses two major components: Fashion Buying and Fashion Merchandising. Fashion Buying involves the art of selecting, negotiating, and procuring fashion products, while Fashion Merchandising focuses on designing store layouts, setting price points, managing inventory, and curating marketing campaigns.
Graduates of this short-term course emerge with a profound understanding of style essentials, the ability to forecast trends by region, and the expertise to curate fashion collections for both labels and retail. The curriculum immerses students in prevailing industry trends, consumer preferences, and purchasing dynamics, equipping them to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of fashion.
The Fashion Buying and Merchandising Course begins with an introduction to the fashion ecosystem, the fashion merchandising process, and the process of buying different mixes and combinations for various categories. It also covers topics such as textile sciences, apparel manufacturing, retail merchandising, quality control, software skills, logistics, and documentation.
Graduates of the short-term course often work behind the scenes in apparel, fashion, decor, design, and retail houses. They take on roles such as buyers for retail and wholesale, planning managers, allocation specialists, trend forecasters, and merchandisers. Their understanding of both creative and logistical subjects help them work across the entire apparel manufacturing, buying and selling process, eventually influencing the fashion choices of their customers.
Students in this course undergo professional competencies and training, fostering a profound understanding of aesthetic vision through a rigorous and holistic learning approach. The course begins by focusing on fundamental concepts, skills, and training, aiming to build a knowledge bank in interior styling and design. As the course progresses, it emphasizes the correlation between conceptualization and the application of styling solutions in diverse contexts. The capstone/live project serves as the culmination, preparing emerging professionals to enter the industry fully equipped.
The curriculum is structured into four courses, each contributing to the comprehensive development of participants:
In Course One, Fundamentals of Fashion Buying and Merchandising, this course provides an overview of fashion buying and merchandising, including fashion terminologies, EOD, POD, fashion theories, and fashion markets. Participants delve into fashion textiles, exploring woven and knitted textiles and their end-use. Software skills are introduced, encompassing MS Excel, basic graphic software (Photoshop, Illustrator), MS Word, and PowerPoint.
In Course Two, Manufacturing in Fashion, this course addresses production processes, including pre-production, in-production, and post-production phases. It also covers retail buying and merchandising, exploring the roles and responsibilities of a retail buyer, merchandising in retail, the concept of merchandise mix, and buying methods. Fashion appreciation involves pattern making, CAD marker concepts, types of seams, and garment construction.
In Course Three, Fashion Marketing, fundamentals of marketing are covered, including the marketing mix, marketing models, and marketing strategies. The course delves into fashion communication, encompassing written, verbal, and visual aspects. Software skills are further advanced, incorporating graphic software (Illustrator, Photoshop), and PowerPoint.
In Course Four, Capstone/Live Project, this final course includes a brand study covering merchandising and marketing, prototype making involving textile selection, seam choice, and finishing, and project mentoring. Elements such as report making and fashion presentations are emphasized to showcase the culmination of the participants' learning journey.
Applicants seeking admission to the Fashion Buying and Merchandising Course must be a minimum of 17 years old and have successfully completed Class X from any recognized educational board.

A. No, Pearl Academy does not provide scholarships for its 11-month Fashion Buying and Merchandising Course. We do however help applicants with an EMI payment plan with our finance partner ‘Leo 1’ should they require the same.
